News That's Hard to Find for June 14, 2018

Trump tears the papers up, they tape them back together

Another law that goes too far. It’s all well and good to keep records for posterity. But putting scraps of paper back together again?
The Presidential Records Act (PRA) of 1978, 44 U.S.C. §§ 22012207 was made into law to stop President Nixon from destroying, selling, or taking a large tax break for donating his records and his secretly recorded White House conversations.
And, as usual, an entire federal bureaucracy has grown up to enforce it; the law.
C’mon now, a newspaper article the president didn’t like?

Lame Street Media Can’t Find Anything Positive About the Trump/Kim Summit

I’m not surprised. There’s no way they will ever give the president a positive nod about anything.
Just because something hasn’t happened before, doesn’t mean it’s ‘historic,'” Time contributing editor Jon Meacham complained Tuesday on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.”
"Now that we've been given their statement, it is far less than advertised. No new commitments. No timetable. No definitions. Glad they met but no breakthroughs," NBC News' Andrea Mitchell tweeted Tuesday.
CNN global affairs analyst Max Boot said Monday on "CNN Tonight" that Trump's meeting with Kim wasn't anything special because it was something "any previous president could have done."

Shale Country Is Out of Workers and Dangling 100% Pay Hikes

Someone with an Associate Degree earns more than a Master’s and a Commercial Driver’s License is worth gold. On the flip side, homes are almost impossible to get and apartment rentals are through the roof.
Where is this? Central Texas.
The oil industry has such a ferocious appetite for workers that it’ll hire just about anyone with the most basic skills. “It is crazy,” said Jazmin Jimenez, 24, who zipped through a two-week training program at New Mexico Junior College in Hobbs, about 100 miles north of Midland, and was hired by Chevron Corp. as a well-pump checker. “Honestly I never thought I’d see myself at an oilfield company. But now that I’m here -- I think this is it.”
That’s understandable, considering the $28-a-hour she makes is double what she was earning until December as a guard at the Lea County Correctional Facility in Hobbs. When the boom goes bust, as history suggests they all do, shale-extraction businesses won’t be able to out-pay most employers anymore. Jimenez said she’ll take the money as long as it lasts.

The Best and Worst Airlines and Airports of 2018

As I don’t fly – and it looks like it’ll stay that way for some time in the future – I’m posting this for those who do. I don’t know who the author is so I can’t verify these claims.

How To Get Your Kids To Do Chores (Without Resenting It)

You come home from work to find your 8 year old picking up things around the house. Or voluntarily steps up to help clean the dinner dishes.
Hard to believe?
It’s not only possible but common throughout some Mexican/Guatemalan communities. And can be among American households too. How?
Kids as young as 3 want to help. And they don’t need to be rewarded for it.
1. Expose kids to chores as much as possible
2. Think small tasks, big contributions
3. Always aim to work together
4. Don't force it
5. Change your mindset about young children:

Predict the 2018 World Cup

A fun site for those who enjoy soccer. Not me though. I think it’s the most boring waste of 90 minutes on the face of this earth. But, I did the list and made a prediction; Germany beating Brazil for the cup.

Einstein the Genius - Racist

Now they’re trying to excuse his early comments as a failing of his youth. They want to claim he overcame it in his later years.
Yeah.
Einstein also derided the people of Ceylon, which is now known as Sri Lanka. In Ceylon, he wrote, the locals “live in great filth and considerable stench at ground level,” before adding they “do little, and need little. The simple economic cycle of life.”

Shock Poll of Government Workers

Hunh? Am I reading that right?
Polls don’t thrill me as they often turn out to be so wrong. But, if this is anywhere near accurate, it’s an eyebrow raiser [if you’re not Canadian].
But, no surprise, government-related union bosses are not thrilled by it at all. They’ve already gone to federal court, claiming it violates the First Amendment guaranteed freedom of association. (Where in the constitution does it say that non-members can have union dues withdrawn from their pay checks?)
Last week, Trump signed an executive order instructing agencies to no longer allow union officials to spend more than 25 percent of their work hours on official time, a practice where union federal employees are compensated for performing representational duties. The order also stipulated that unions not be able to use official time to lobby Congress or to represent employees who have filed grievances or are appealing adverse personnel actions.
[snip]
The executive order also said that unions must pay rent for the use of federal office space and that agencies should stop covering official time-related travel expenses.[Emphasis added.]
