The News You Won't Easily Find for April 28, 2018

Senate Rule Change to Speed up Judicial Appointments

Senate Rules Committee passes changes 10-9 (Guess the party split?) to reduce DimocRAT stall tactics. McConnell trying to do it before the 2018 midterms because he isn't positive about the results.

Of course not. GOP leadership at all levels lacks the jevos to get out and do what it takes to not only keep but gain seats.

That proposal just passed the Senate Rules Committee:
Looking to speed the confirmation process for a backlog of President Trump’s appointments, Senate Republicans on Wednesday advanced a measure to cut down on floor debate for certain executive branch and judicial nominees.
Republicans said Democrats forced their hand on the issue by making the Senate devote too much floor time over the past year to clearing procedural hurdles on even non-controversial and lower-level nominees.
Pointless wasting time, even when we know what the outcome is going to be, is what we’re talking about here today,” said Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.
The change, pushed by Sen. James Lankford, Oklahoma Republican, passed the Senate rules committee in a party-line vote, 10-9.
The change would cut the maximum debate time for non-Cabinet executive branch nominees from 30 hours to eight, and for district court nominees from 30 hours to two.
Just remember, losing the Senate majority could put this guy in the lead:

And list the House majority could make this one Speaker - THIRD IN LINE TO THE PRESIDENCY!

Chernobyl 32 years after the explosion

People can't live there but animals seems to be doing just fine.

Though humans can't live in the area, scientists say it's possible that the number of animals there is now higher than it was 30 years ago. Today, you can find elk, deer, wolves, bison, and dozens of other species near Chernobyl.

Trump Considering Former GOP Rep. Jeff Miller for VA Secretary

He chaired the House Committee on Veterans Affairs which would certainly qualify him.

He played a major role in the passage of a VA reform plan in 2014 before retiring from Capitol Hill two years later.

And the rumors continue to fly.

The White House may send John Kelly to run the embattled Veterans Affairs department

Unnamed sources (don't you love that?) indicate he could spare him from being fired at the White House.

A White House spokesperson denied that Kelly was being considered for VA secretary, according to Vanity Fair.

Rumors surrounding Kelly's fate have intensified lately. And his role in the White House seemed to shrink as Trump reportedly takes more license to govern his own daily agenda.

Outside advisers to Trump have floated the idea of removing the chief of staff role completely, according to CNN.

Taiwan president ‘willing to meet’ Chinese leader in wake of Korean summit

One has to wonder if the "inexperienced and naive" president of the USA might have something to do with this.

Taiwan’s President Tsai Ing-wen said Friday she would be willing to meet her Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping “for peace and stability.” The statement comes in the wake of a landmark summit between the leaders of the two Koreas. China is suspicious of Tsai’s traditionally pro-independence Democratic Progressive Party. Beijing has cut off official communications with Taipei as the Taiwanese president refuses to accept that the island is part of “one China,” AFP said. When asked on Friday if she would consider meeting Xi given the way the inter-Korean summit unfolded, Tsai said her government “would be willing to do anything that is helpful for… peace and stability.” A meeting with the Chinese leader could take place “without any political pre-condition and on an equal footing,” she added.

EPA "Whistleblower" A Fake

Why should anybody be surprised. He inflated his Coast Guard service and received $24k in bonuses under the same program he complained about.

Kevin Chmielewski received $24,000 in raises after just three to four months of service at the EPA, which neither he nor Democratic lawmakers have publicly disclosed even as the Democrats have cited his complaints about EPA spending on the two other staffers' raises, according to sources and EPA documents confirming the raises.

ABBA Records Two New Songs

One of my all time favorite music groups. After 35 years of doing other music-related things, they returned to the recording studios. Whatever the final product is, I'm sure the whole world will watch it.

Per the AP, the Swedish pop supergroup says it has recorded two new songs, including one entitled "I Still Have Faith in You." The news was announced Friday in an Instagram statement from Benny Andersson, Bjorn Ulvaeus, Anni-Frid Lyngstad, and Agnetha Faltskog. ABBA had big hits in the 1970s with songs such as "Waterloo" and "Dancing Queen" before splitting up in 1982. The band's statement said the members reunited to plan a virtual tour featuring digital avatars and decided to head back into the studio, which they noted was "an extremely joyous experience."

An aside, when they wrote their original songs, not one of them spoke English. That came later about the same time the group official came together. ABBA is the first letter of the first names of the four.

Hilton, a Very Big Great White Shark Swimming Around the Gulf

It's amazing how far they travel. Appears they hav e no predators other than Man and one has to wonder just how big they become.

OCEARCH researchers have been following the 12-foot great white's route since March 2017 when they tagged the shark near Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. Hilton, weighing in at 1,326 pounds, is fitted with a tag that pings to transmit his location when his fins break the surface.

The shark has traveled up and down along the coasts of the Atlantic Ocean — from Nova Scotia to Florida — but he's never been seen in the Gulf of Mexico before. He's been in the waters for nearly two weeks now.

Another Navy Ship That Can't Carry Out Its Missions

What's the sense of having "modern" ships if they can't do their jobs? LCS ships keep breaking down. One spent the winter stuck in the Great Lakes because it couldn't navigate the ice. And, when they do work, they either run into other ships or let other ships run into them.

The catamaran-style expeditionary fast transport ships, according to the report, were supposed to be able to carry 1.2 million pounds of cargo for 1,200 nautical miles at an average speed of 35 knots, or about 40 miles per hour. But initial testing showed the ships were only able to carry that amount for 769 nautical miles at an average speed of 31 knots.

The aluminum ships have a large cargo space and a flight deck for helicopters and drones. They were designed to respond to a wide variety of military missions and could also be used in evacuations and disaster relief.
