DOD builds wall, Slug slime glue, Secret Service director fired, and much more good stuff for April 10, 2019

Defense Department awards first contracts for Trump's border wall construction
And all the Dims effort to stop it are failing. More promises kept. God Bless you Mister President.
The Department of Defense awarded its first contracts to two companies Tuesday for construction of a barrier along the U.S. border with Mexico, according to a notice posted on the DOD’s website.
The Galveston, Texas-based company SLSCO was awarded a $789 million contract for “border replacement wall construction” in Santa Teresa, N.M., while Barnard Construction Co., a firm based in Bozeman, Mont., received a contract worth $187 million for “pedestrian wall replacement” in Yuma, Ariz., the DOD’s website stated.

The absurdly high cost of insulin, explained
As one who uses a lot of insulin on a daily basis, this is of serious interest to me. I read where the hurricane that devastated Puerto Rico destroyed a major insulin provider.
The cost of the four most popular types of insulin has tripled over the past decade, and the out-of-pocket prescription costs patients now face have doubled. By 2016, the average price of insulin rose to $450 per month — and costs continue to rise, so much so that as many as one in four people with diabetes are now skimping on or skipping lifesaving doses.
Skip
One clear solution to the problem would be to bring a generic version of insulin to the market. There are currently no true generic options available — though there are several rebranded and biosimilar insulins — in part because companies have made those incremental improvements to insulin products, which has allowed them to keep their formulations under patent, and because older insulin formulations have fallen out of fashion.
Yes, some insulin is made from pigs. And cows. But the major source comes from labs.
Firstly, the human gene responsible for producing insulin is extracted. This is then inserted into the genetic material of bacteria or yeast cells. As these cells replicate and multiply, they produce insulin. In the end, the insulin they produce gets purified and is ready for medical use

Obama, Merkel Hold ‘Private’ Talks in Berlin
Why is it that Dims believe they can flout US law with impunity.
The Logan Act (1 Stat. 613, 18 U.S.C. § 953
§ 953. Private correspondence with foreign governments.
Any citizen of the United States, wherever he may be, who, without authority of the United States, directly or indirectly commences or carries on any correspondence or intercourse with any foreign government or any officer or agent thereof, with intent to influence the measures or conduct of any foreign government or of any officer or agent thereof, in relation to any disputes or controversies with the United States, or to defeat the measures of the United States, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than three years, or both.
This section shall not abridge the right of a citizen to apply himself, or his agent, to any foreign government, or the agents thereof, for redress of any injury which he may have sustained from such government or any of its agents or subjects.
Think he got clearance before the meeting? I wonder what he was meeting her about “in private.” Why wasn’t it publicly?

20-Year-Old Raising Five Siblings Gifted New Car From Anonymous Donors
One of those heart-warming stories we don’t hear enough about.
A Florida community has come together to give a young woman and the five siblings she is raising something they needed -- their own car.
The Orange County Sheriff's Office said Samantha Rodriguez has been taking care of her younger siblings, ages 6 through 15, after they lost their parents to cancer in recent years.

SCOTUS could restrain judicial deference to federal agencies
Takes a minute to figure out what this means so I’ll put it in my own words.
Let’s say someone is unhappy with a government rule and takes it to court. In most cases, judges will say the people who make the rules no more about them and should have the final word.
This case is all about VA desk jockeys denying a veteran benefits based on their interpretation of VA rules. In other words, judging their own work.
SCOTUS made a rule 20 years ago that was about as clear as mud. This case gives them a chance to clear things up.
We can only hope.
Last week, the Supreme Court heard arguments in Kisor v. Wilkie, a seemingly mundane case stemming from a Department of Veterans’ Affairs (VA) decision to deny a veteran benefits based on a regulatory interpretation. More interestingly, the case bears watching for its potential impact on how our government interacts with technology innovators. Today, entrepreneurs face a tough headwind when challenging federal interpretations of the law, but Kisor could help change that.

Slug Slime to Glue Wounds Together?
Yuck! I know there are a lot of strange things in this world that find their way into or onto the human body. Some holistic and others through high and mighty scientific instituted. So, just perhaps this creature could live up to its promise.
Slug slime could create stronger glue to prevent scarring and infection in surgery, suggest scientists.
The defensive slime is produced by a common garden slug found in the UK to fouls the jaws of any would-be predator .
The Dusky Arion slug which can grow up to seven centimeters long can be found in gardens across Britain - but it also produces a slime that can be used to help wounds heal.
Now two studies have revealed more about how this glue achieves its strong sticking power and flexibility, insights that could be used to create better medical adhesives.

Trump Fires Director of Secret Service
Is the president cleaning house? He sent DHS secretary out the door. Now this guy that no one in the White House cared for.
Trump ordered acting chief of staff Mick Mulvaney to fire Director of Secret Service Randolph 'Tex' Alles today
His departure was not unexpected and was welcome by most members of the law enforcement agency, sources tell DailyMail.com
The change comes on the heels of an episode at Mar-a-Lago involving a Chinese national on a club guest list who was arrested with devices bearing computer malware
The appointment of Alles was pushed by General John F. Kelly, then Secretary of Homeland Security
Sources tell DailyMail.com that Kelly threatened to quit as DHS secretary if Trump did not appoint his friend Tex

Dogs REALLY CAN sniff out lung cancer with 97% accuracy
Dogs truly ARE Man’s best friend. They provide succor to the ill and give unfettered love to those who care for them. Some help the blind make their way in the world and others detect medical problems to alert physicians.
So why should this surprise anyone?
Scientists taught three Beagles how to sniff out lung cancer in blood samples
They identified which sample was from a lung cancer patient 96.7% of the time
However, it is not the first time scientists have found dogs can sniff out cancer
Dogs have smell receptors which are 10,000 time more accurate than humans'

Could spicy food offer hope in tackling cancer?
One immediately thinks of Latin Americ
ans who supposedly eat a lot of spicy foods. But other societies do the same. Korean Kimchi has a real wallop and other foods are similar. As for me, I frequently indulge and hope there is some serious truth in this study.
Only one in ten patients is still alive five years after their diagnosis because the illness has often spread elsewhere, figures suggest.
It is not the first time researchers have found capsaicin – a form of vanilloid – has cancer-fighting properties.
Scientists say it triggers a cell receptor called TRPV1 which controls which substances the cancerous growth can feed on.
As it fights to battle this, the growth eventually self-destructs. As more and more cancer cells die, the tumour is stopped from growing larger.
Other experiments have found the family of compounds capsaicin belongs to can kill cancer cells by attacking their powerhouse, the mitochondria.
But experts have repeatedly warned that it is unlikely just eating lots of spice alone could help to combat any form of cancer.
US withdraws troops from Libya amid rival militias fighting near capital
Thank the Lord!
We’re not sending in more to try to “stabilize the situation” as we have so many times in the past.
BENGHAZI, Libya — The United States said Sunday it has temporarily withdrawn some of its forces from Libya due to “security conditions on the ground,” as a Libyan military commander’s forces advanced toward the capital, Tripoli, clashing with rival militias.
A small contingent of American troops has been in Libya in recent years helping local forces combat Islamic State and al-Qaida militants, as well as protecting diplomatic facilities.
"The security realities on the ground in Libya are growing increasingly complex and unpredictable," said Marine Corps Gen. Thomas Waldhauser, the head of U.S. Africa Command. "Even with an adjustment of the force, we will continue to remain agile in support of existing U.S. strategy."
Of course it is. It lost the Warsaw Pact countries and is trying to rebuild its empire elsewhere.

Reddit Page Bans White People From Posting
With the demise of Google+, many of us have sought other sources for daily news and other social contacts. Gab and MeWe are two of them, Reddit is another.
Reddit is, by far, as restrictive and biased as just about any similar site I’ve seen so far. The main problem is how it’s structured. It does not have one open area but a myriad of subreddits moderated by individuals who make up their own rules.
Such is the case with this particular page.
A Reddit page dedicated to black issues has declared that white people are no longer allowed to post there anymore.
The forum, r/BlackPeopleTwitter, posted an “important announcement,” which stated, “Due to the overwhelming number of white people and white opinions present on BTP, we are now restricting access to this sub for black folks only.”
Non-black people then responded to the post by humiliating themselves, embracing their white guilt, and begging to be allowed to post again.
Super white dude here. I’d like to apply for the token white guy position,” responded one white user. “I won’t post or comment unless you all want to say something like “this sub isn’t racist we have a white guy.”
One of the ways around this is to establish your own subreddit and let those who wish to follow you know your rules.
My personal one is r/soldiersstories @ https://www.reddit.com/r/soldiersstories/
Anything and everything short of porn and personal attacks is welcomed.

Booking a Flight Soon? These Are the Best (and Worst) Airlines, Researchers Say
Rankings are based on on-time arrivals, mishandles baggage, bumping passengers, and consumer complaints.
I don’t see anything about leg room and all the extra fees they are now throwing at you.
Delta is 1st
JetBlue Airways ranked second, followed by Southwest Airlines and last year’s winner, Alaska Airlines.
Discount carrier Frontier Airlines ranked last, just behind American Airlines.

White House To TARGET Illegal Alien Money Transfers Out of U.S
Absolutely the best move that can be made. Get ‘em in the pocketbook.
15-25% tax on all cash remittances to targeted countries
Ban on any remittances to Mexico, other nations, if sender cannot prove they are a U.S. citizen or legal resident
Temporary halt to all remittances to Mexico until that government halts caravans and enforces border controls to U.S.
The White House plan to go after remittance payments falls in line with a proposal from former Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach, who is being considered to replace outgoing DHS Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen.
Kobach told Breitbart News on Tuesday that this will be an effective way for President Donald Trump to compel the Mexican government to take more enforcement action against Central Americans trafficking through their country.
The major question is; how much of this can get done without the obstruction by House Dims? The tax part must be something that needs a law. The showing proof of citizenship will end up in court.

The 21 Most Important Questions Of Your Life
Stuff like this is always subjective. What one sees as truth may not be the same for others. The author grouped them under categories but some are good for all. Here are my favorites:
6. What new things am I learning?
8. How meaningful is my work?
21. How can I help one person today?

Why the 'showiest' males have the smallest testicles
Where does the DailyMail come up with this stuff? It’s more hilarious than the National Inquirer.
Primates including humans only have enough energy to grow big testes OR an impressive beard or mane, study claims
Male primates face stiff competition as they they try and attract potential mates
Researchers studied testicle size and looks of 100 species - including humans
They believe primates only have the energy to develop one or the other
Range in size from a peppercorn to a tennis ball's diameter depending on animal
The Aussies really don’t have anything better to conduct research on?
