A cover Already!

It's only been less than a month since I signed a contract with XOXO Publishing and their artist sent me a book cover to review. Here it is -

It really blows me away as it covers ALL the main points of the novel. Brother Coyote howling at Mother Moon signals it is night in the desert when all the creatures big and small come forth to hunt. The Saguaro cacti show it's in the Sonora Desert and there's my main character, savoring the symphony of the desert night.

I don't wish to speak badly of my other publisher for this novel but, after almost a year and a half, they hadn't even gotten to the cover. I'm still waiting to hear from my editor. But, if he/she is as conscientious as this artist, I'm really looking forward to working with him/her.

  3. Thanks so much for the feedback.

However, I have to admit that I'm not completely satisfied with this. I told the illustrator that the cowboy HAD to be changed to a soldier in his combat jacket.

After all, that's what the story's all about - a GI wounded in combat who has his amnesia and life cured by an Indian in the Sonora Desert.

  4. Nice cover, but change the full moon to a crescent if you can. One of my hobbies is Astronomy and the first thing I saw was you can't have a full moon with the sun behind it. The Moon and Sun need to be on opposite sides of the earth for a full moon.

I know its a bit nit picky and 99.9% of the people out there wouldn't notice or care but it jumped out at me.

The book title and cover remind me of the time I visited the Caves of Sonora in Texas.

  5. SBJones - thanks, I saw the same thing but want to keep it big so people can see the amazing clarity of it when they spend a night in the desert.
And, I think I'll have a new one up soon where we get rid of Purple Cowboy and replace him with a soldier.
