News and Interesting Stuff for September 6, 2018

There is not a single place anywhere on the internet that isn't filled with the same stuff. Nike. White House gossip. Woodward's book. And on and on and on. I've ignored most of that stuff and hope you enjoy what I've chosen to share with you here.

Trump Changing the Way Teens View the News
Since President Trump took office, he has relentlessly attacked the media. He’s shunned individual reporters, referred to the press as “the enemy of the American people,” and popularized the term “fake news” to denigrate credible articles. Meanwhile, public trust in the press is at an all-time low. According to a recent Knight-Gallup report, only a third of Americans view the press positively.
There is increasing evidence that this skepticism, exacerbated by the president’s relentless attacks, is trickling down to the next generation of voters. A 2017 report on a series of focus groups with 52 people between the ages of 14 and 24, conducted by Data & Society and the Knight Foundation, found that many young Americans believe the news is biased and are skeptical of its accuracy. “There was no assumption that the news would convey the truth or would be worthy of their trust,” the study reported.
Teenagers, in particular, appear to be increasingly questioning the credibility and value of traditional media organizations. In interviews with The Atlantic, teens expressed great skepticism about the accuracy of the mainstream media, reiterated Trump’s biased characterization of many news sources, and said the president’s outrageous tweets have become so much a part of everyday life that they’ve morphed into catchphrases.
Does anyone beside me catch the whiny tone of this piece? “Poor news media. We’re being unfairly picked on.”
I, for one, think it hits the nail on the head and reports that the president’s constant attacks on “fake news” are raising the attention level of a lot of people. They no longer takes reports at face value, questioning and seeking the truth about everything.
Thanks goodness for the internet and search engines.

Judge Kavanaugh Hearings

People Paid to Protest Kavanaugh Hearings.
Not exactly nutcase witnesses. All the reason in the world to believe they saw what they talked about.
On Tuesday, Real Clear Politics reported that author and commentator Adam W. Schindler interviewed three Texas doctors who claimed they witnessed protesters being paid in cash as they waited in line to attend the contentious hearing for Judge Brett Kavanaugh.

The Democrat Freak-Show

Yesterday the Democrats showed their own version of the Bar Scene from Star Wars.  Sarsour, the terrorist-affiliated Muslim "women's right-to-genital-mutilation" hero-ette was there along with the usual Hollywood twits.  And of course, there was Durbin, bringing up the rear end, through which he often speaks.
This is a very good take:
...America is ruled by nine shaman in black robes, who are allowed to make up whatever laws they like. No one says it this way, but that is the truth. That’s how America ended up with an absolute right to abortion, despite the word never being uttered by any of the Founders. That’s how we ended up with a bizarre system of rights for prisoners and foreigners. Most recently, the high druid council decided the republic could not survive unless Bob and Bill get to play house and pretend they are married.
The reason the Left is sure to go crazy over Kavanaugh is his views on social issues and he will tilt the court further into the direction of normal people.
The Democrats understand that you cannot have rule by circus freak if the high druid council is opposed to the freak show....
Kavanaugh will be a member of the Court before October 1.
Go ahead, riot about it!  Riot justifies more extreme measures of control, and we have lots of ammo!

Will Kavanaugh be Able to Continue his Private Life?
With the radical left and violent ANTIFA nutjobs who oppose his nomination, will he be able to continue his charitable activities? Can he continue to run. Will he be able to serve meals to the homeless? Coach his daughter’s softball teams. And all the other charitable stuff he does on a regular basis?
He will have security as all the associates have.
The Supreme Court of the United States Police is a small U.S. federal law enforcement agency headquartered in the District of Columbia, whose mission is to ensure the integrity of the constitutional mission of the U.S. Supreme Court by protecting the Supreme Court building, the Justices, employees, guests, and visitors. The Marshal and the Supreme Court Police are authorized by 40 U.S.C. § 6121 to police the Supreme Court Building and protect the Justices, employees of the Court, and visitors to the Court.
Established in 1935, the Supreme Court security force was tasked to provide protection for the Supreme Court building. The Court had previously resided in the United States Capitol, and the original force of 33 officers were selected from the ranks of the United States Capitol Police.
Currently, the Supreme Court Police are responsible for protecting the Chief Justice, Associate Justices, building occupants, and the Court's historic building and grounds. Additional responsibilities include courtroom security, dignitary protection, emergency response, and providing assistance to building visitors.
Units of the Supreme Court Police include:
Uniformed Services
Protective Services
Threat Assessment Unit
Background Investigation Unit
Honor Guard

Canine Unit
Supreme Court officers are trained at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center in Georgia. They may retire at the age of 50 with 20 years of qualifying service, or at any age with 25 years of service. They are awarded "enhanced retirement benefits".
Can these people really protect Kavanaugh, his family, and associated?

Cities Can't Prosecute People for Sleeping on Streets

I read the entire article and don’t quite know how to respond to it. It all appears that a bunch of politicians have decided what to do about homeless people and the courts have stepped in to overrule their decisions.
Arrest them if beds are available in shelters – even if those shelters call for religious activities the homeless don’t agree with.
"A city cannot, via the threat of prosecution, coerce an individual to attend religion-based treatment programs consistently with the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment," Judge Marsha Berzon wrote.
Another cites the 14th for “cruel and unusual punishment.”
It still doesn’t deal with the homeless problem in general.
Why is someone homeless? By choice or circumstances.
If circumstances, what can be done to help to change them?
If by choice, why and what can be done about it?
Any and all thoughts would be appreciated. Full story @ https://www.newsmax.com/newsfront/us-court-people-sleeping/2018/09/05/id/880255/

The Diplomatic Courier Service

Some routes any routine mail service couldn’t and wouldn’t undertake. Day in and day out around the world.
The US Department of State ranks Mauritania as a Level 3 destination, out of four in its threat-level scale. As in: “Reconsider Travel.”
Good thing, then, that I’m traveling with that same State Department on this 12-hour desert journey, as a guest on the Diplomatic Courier Service’s current mission, transporting sensitive government materials between the US embassies in the capital cities of Dakar and Nouakchott. Our caravan consists of four gleaming white government vehicles: a Toyota Land Cruiser and Mercedes cargo van up from Dakar, along with two Toyota crew-cab pickups that meet us at the border. We’re on just one of thousands of such trips the service will execute this year as it delivers classified cargo, contained in tamper-proof orange pouches, to 270 US embassies and consulates around the world.

College Degrees No Longer Needed for Jobs
The piece says, “This is a significant change.”
I think it’s huge. An acknowledgment that either the universities are not turning out what the big companies need or they don’t need what they’ve required in the past.
The Washington Examiner reports:
Big companies like Google, Apple, and IBM are no longer requiring applicants to hold a college degree.
This is a significant change. Historically, employers have required a college degree whether or not it was necessary to do the job.
Is this because colleges are no longer teaching the needed skills, or because there are so many job openings to fill that standards are dropping? Could it be that vocational training and self-taught skills are enough for certain jobs in the modern-day economy?
IBM is now looking at candidates with experience in non-traditional education, such as coding boot camps or industry-related vocational classes.
Glassdoor compiled an August list of 15 big companies that no longer require a degree to apply:
Google
Ernst & Young
Penguin Random House
Costco Wholesale
Whole Foods
Hilton
Publix
Apple
Starbucks
Nordstrom
Home Depot
IBM
Bank of America
Chipotle
Lowe’s

How to test your potential to do a job you’ve never done before
Can you succeed in a job without prior experience?
With all the job opportunities out there, this is an important piece to check out for yourself and to share with others.
Does the job excite you?
Is the job a good fit for your personality?
Is learning your superpower?
One final piece of advice: The best way to put these three principles in practice is to get feedback from others, particularly people who know you well and who are comfortable providing you with their honest views on your potential. While working out whether something is interesting or not is easy, you will better understand what new jobs really require from you, how your personality differs from others, and how much you’re able to learn quickly, if you ask other people to tell you. To paraphrase the poet Maya Angelou: “When someone shows you who they are, believe them the first time.”

And, all the job opportunities mean presenting yourself properly. Not all jobs require résumés, but it’s always a good idea to be prepared.
